As the Australian Conservation Foundation says, with drought and water restrictions becoming regular events, it's time to permanently change our water consumption habits. Australians use more water than all other OECD countries except the USA and Canada. While the majority of our national water usage is for agricultural irrigation, we cannot discount the amount of water used (and wasted) in the home.
Each Australian household produces an average of 1.14 tonnes of waste per year. The majority of this waste ends up in landfill or as litter. Almost all products take water, energy and materials to produce. What we send to landfill is a waste of those resources. Even recycling processes consume some resources.
To address the waste problem, we need to consider the entire product cycle and focus on reducing consumption, as well as reusing what we already have. There are easy things everyone can do to reduce their household's water consumption and reduce waste.
Then, to be a leader in this area, take what you've learnt at home and work with others to apply it in your workplace.
